ideas for DFW things to do in Newcastle???

Hi guys!

Am going up to Newcastle for a few days next week for work. This is coinciding with my boyfriend coming over from Holland, so I'm taking him too.

Neither of us have been there before and I'm about to go a-surfing the net to find some things for us to do in my spare time.

BUT I'd thought I'd ask you guys here - full of bright ideas I'm sure - what there is to do DFW style???????

Thanks!
Alex x

I went up a few weeks ago with my daughter and £10 (I stayed with family ;) )...but I managed to go to the Life museum (has cool dinosaurs!) - I found some money off coupons on their webby, I went to the beach twice... a nice freebie... chilly, but a lovely walk, and we had a look round the metro centre... loadsa shops :D love it!

Also in the evenings., it's lovely to walk along the river and maybe get 1 drink at one of the bars or resteraunts.

I'm sure some locals may have some more (and better) ideas though...

  • Discovery museum, Laing art gallery both free, both in city centre. Walk along Quayside, free, unless you pop in pitcher and piano!! NUFC have a museum, dont know how much to get in tho, get a metro to Whitley bay and walk along sea front, or a metro to Tynemouth. The list is endless!! Enjoy yourselves

  • If you're going to walk along the quayside you can walk across the millenium bridge & visit the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead Free
  • Some good suggestions already. Newcastle is a really cool place. Just wander about by the Quayside, take a metro to Tynemouth and go to the beach, as suggested already, or go to Jesmond Dene, a really great park (well I haven't been for a few years but it used to be brilliant for a free day out)

the roman fort at wallsend is pretty cheap to, as is the sea life centre at culler coats.
would def recommend jesmond dene its lovely.
there's plenty of cheap pubs in the centre of newcastle that do meal deals.
stick to the haymarket metro end of town as the pubs there are a lot cheaper than the bigg market/quayside areas

keep your drink.....just give me the money
  • Thanks so much for all that advice! I don't have to start work on the days I'm there til 2pm - so walking quayside or on the coast sounds like our kind of thing, and maybe check out the gallery.

    Thanks again!

There's a fantastic museum - the Discovery Museum - which you can EASILY waste hours in and it's free entry (with the option to make a donation). They have a nice little cafe too.

It has historical displays, a Science floor, plenty to keep you entertained for a while. It's my favourite thing to do in Newcastle and I live there!!
