Not sure if this is the correct part to post this so just let me know and i'll try and move to right one.
I got a letter from a debt collector today however it is for a debt that has nothing to do with me. I phoned the company who accepted the bill was not for me just simply someone with the same name but completely different address.
Does this affect my credit rating in any way? How would i check this without having to pay?

Try looking at the Experian and Equifax websites to see if there are free trials and check your credit file. That is the only way to be absolutely certain what information is registered against your name.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.
