Do you know what the full time hours are there, as it varies in different companies. If a full time week is 37 1/2 hrs (7.5 hrs paid a day) then 32.5 hrs would be £12,815.40 - £13,715.00 pro rata but their standard week could be 35 or 40 hours, or some arbitrary amount.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • Just off the top of my head I am using a full time figure of 40 hours I make it
£12014 - £12857 but if you know different let me know the correct hours.

If it is pro rata for a school, it may also mean that you don't get paid during some or all of the school holidays. You really need to check with them to find out exactly what the wage is. Also, teachers get paid some non-contact time (i.e. for marking etc) so even though a school is only open 32.5 hrs teachers could be getting paid for more hours than that.

  • As a school governor we used to work things as a 35 hr weekso I'm surprised they aren't offering a full week rather than 32.5 - don't see what part of the working day you are going to miss. Are the hours open to negotiation or fixed and do you get a lunch break?

Doing 6.5 hours a day yes you DO get a lunch break. (European Working Time Directive, you have to have a break of 30 minutes if you work more than 6 hours!)

So the only question there is are you paid for your lunch break or not?

    Morning all

    thanks for the reply's

I spoke to my boyfriends mum last night who used to work as a school secetary and she said that pro rata means over the whole year i'll be paid the same.

To save confusion i'll ring them on monday and find out - hopefully i'll get some kind of booklet which will tell me everythin i need to know

I had this when I worked 25 hours a week in a school. They quote an annual salary based on a full time person working (say) 36 hours a week all year round. You'll be working part-time in term-time only so they reduce that amount accordingly, then they divide the result into 12 monthly payments.

The school secretary did explain the calculation to me but it was pretty complicated because of issues like paid holiday (you have to take your breaks in school holidays) so I can't clearly explain how it works. Your best bet is to phone up and ask exactly how much your gross salary will be.

Congratulations on getting the job
  • Hi everyone

i start my new job on tuesday and everythin seems to be goin wrong

i've rang up the council personel and they have said i'm goin to be on £11228 which is a hell of a lot less than what i'm on now
i then rang the school and they said that they have sent off my forms to the council who will send out my contract and forms but i have not recieved anything which is worrying as i start on tuesday

i know it's my fault and i should of rang up sooner but they seem to like ignorin phones in my new work

also the person i spoke to at the school said i should of talked about the salery at the interview but nothing was mentioned which in a way is also my fault

any help would be really greatful as i cant afford to drop that much money but i suppose i will have to work durin school holidays which is what i wanted to do anyway
