Painting mugs/plates for children

Thinking of offering paint a mug stall at our school fayre.
Mugs bulk purchase from Ikea, Tesco etc but which pens would we be best using?
There are glass, porcelain, ceramic & where best to buy.
Need to be child friendly & as clean as possible so paints in pens form is best I think, unless you know otherwise.

Would appreciate any hints or tips, links to best buys.
Thanks

  • Hi, I'm sure many others will be able to come back with better options as I have only done this at home with my girls.

I have bought paint pens from Baker Ross in the past and they work well. However, they aren't cheap - £10.99 for 6. I guess paints (in a pot) might be better value for lots of children but I don't know if they would be harder to use as the paint that comes from the pens is quite runny.

Here is a link for the paint pens

I bought some mugs from Ikea, so my boys can decorate them for their Grandparents for christmas, I'm just waiting on the pens to come from Bakerross as mentioned about.

They always have something like that at the boys xmas fayre at the school, which is always a big hit, plus they always run out!

Can you let me know once they arrive how you found them regarding ease of use, drying time etc. Do you plan to bake them to set?

I know you said you didn't want paints (with paint brushes) BUT earlier this year I bought a paint your own mug set from Wilkos for just under a £1. They have quite a lot of arty kids things at really cheap prices
:p Busy working Mum of 3
