homemade christmas tree decorations

I'd really love to make my own garlands for the tree this year,i'm thinking sweetie themed like lollypops strung together,swirly type candy or coloured popcorn.would anyone know how to do this ?would you glue string onto the lollys and then varnish or is there another way? or any other ideas for a sweetie themed tree?

My SIL did a sweetie tree last year, she made her garlands from sticking sweets (toffees, quality street, roses, celebrations, etc) together.
You can also do popcorn garlands as you said, gingerbread biscuits, candy canes....can't think of any more at the moment!0 -
popcorn garlands are easy, needle & thread, and a hooge bowl
we did them last year
(we put them out for the birds afterwards, but they didnt eat them)
yesterday i tried making little gingerbread men for the tree
very easy to do, as i have never hand sewn anything before
i am going to make a garland of them i think with stockings/gingham hearts/candy canes etc inbetween them, the canes might be my only sticky point as they would have to be so small

wow love those gingerbread men. i'm planning on making a similar garland. but going to use purple buttons and ribbons.( cause i'm just ever so slightly addicted to purple,lol)0

Could do one each for son, girlfriend and little grandson but how did you make that little dress ?I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !
