The key thing is to structure a meaningful reason for appeal. I found a new estate that was on the market in 1991 and compared all of the bands with that. Going back through the local papers on the microfilm in the local library is a good way of accessing such info.

I'm in Scotland, and also in a new build (2000). Our flat is banded E even though it is worth less then similar size victorian flats in our street, which are banded B. The valuation board replied to my initial letter that in 1991 my flat would have been worth more than the flats opposite. Their claim is that in 1991, modern flats were worth more than victorian ones (and it doesn't matter what they are worth comparatively now).

So, first, is there any point in challenging that principle? It just seems insane!

Second, I suppose I have to find all the flats that were new in 1991 and compare. Does anyone have any good advice about short cuts for info on new builds in Edinburgh?

    Thanks.

My house was built in 1992, how do I check if its in the correct band as I can't find a price for 1991?

As a rough guide, in most areas 1992 prices were 10% less than those in 1991
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

    ok Lincroft1710, thanks
  • A friend of mind said that I should contact the council for a rebate on my council tax because I live within 200m of a petrol station (explosion zone).

    Has anyone heard of this?

Certainly nothing in council tax legislation for this - any possible reduction would be in the value of the property used by the Valuation Office Agency to set the council tax band, you would need to speak with them direct regarding this.

There is a possibility (and I stress possibility) that you may get a reduction in you CT band for living next door to a petrol filling station, but such reductions were only given because of any nuisance factor. Even 2 doors away reductions were resisted.

    Thanks for the replies.

Will definitely need to speak to my friend again as he claims he got a reduction based on living within 200m - certainly not next door!
I will post an update here when I learn more.
  • We were originally scammed by a company called Dalton & Dalton who took our money (in cash) and didn't provide the service for a council tax reband. Following the guidance on the site, we have successfully had our band lowered. It had been incorrectly banded for 21 years, we have tried to get the money back from the council and they say they owe us nothing. When we spoke to the lady on the phone, she said are you not happy with getting rebanded. Not sure what to do on how to get the council to cough up for 21 year of paying too much council tax.

Have you received any council tax benefit or any council tax discounts/exemptions during the period ?

Also, what date has the band been adjusted from ?.
