dogs and dog fish food ?

Hi,

Ive been looking online and cant find if its not good for dogs. My dog love tuna from a can with rice- to be honest, its the one things, apart from human food, shell eat straight away without looking at it, then me then walking off,

It is ok to do this everyday? Im worried as ive heard all sorts saying it causes cancer , braing problems ect..

A well balanced dog food that contains fish should not be a problem for your dog and in my opinion the better(more expensive) dog foods usually(but not always) include the other nutrients that your dog needs, an example being Natural Dog Food Company, Salmon and brown rice with no artifical colours, flavours, preservatives, no added sugars, dairy etc.
  • Fish is great for dogs and mine reguarly have tuna, cod, trout but I wouldn't feed them this everyday as it can in my personal experience be a bit too much for them and they shouldn't expect it either just as a treat. Rice is always good for a dog as it is a good source of fibre.

I would personally suggest a fish based dog food, take a look at the Burns or James Welbeloved range. To wean your dog onto it try adding tuna to it in small portions and then gradually decrease it if the dog is fussy about eating dry food.

Ive tried everything, she wont eat just one food, so it isnt good to give everyday?
  • There have been health scares due to mercury levels in tinned tuna, and the recc was to eat less than 3 tins a week. That's for a human, so i'd imagine if there was a problem it would be much much less tuna for a dog.

Have you ruled out health problems for why he won't eat proper food? Or are you maybe not being strict enough?

Just read your post rgay how about you start again forom scratch with the feeding? I would first get her checked out just to be on the safe side.

Then the hard part, and its hard I can vouch for that, but if you stick at it, and I really mean stick at it you will sort it out.

Pickl new feed times and put down the food of your choice, leave there for 15 minutes. If she doesnt eat it then pick it up. Do not give her anything else until the next meal time. That means nothing at all, ie no treats or titbits

Do not give in, she will try every trick in the book to make you give in. Be strong.

This can go on for days, you have to be strong, and remind yourself you are doing it for her own good. She will eat when she is ready, she wont starve herself believe me.

Dogs are very clever, they soon become the "boss" You need to turn the table back to you being the "boss"

Please be strong and give it a go, you will have a changed dog believe me.

If you need need a bit of support you will get plenty of that in here, we know how hard it is.

  • Have you tried Chappie?

I used to turn my nose up at it as it was one of the cheaper brands, but my dog (when I had one) loved it and that had fish in (it smelt like tuna!) I know lots of vets recommend it these days.

I get you rgay, thats a hard one. I always tell my mum that if TJ lived with her she would need a wheel barrow to push him around in. I guess you will just have to play it by ear so to speak.
