Paying tax working in UK but for Bermudian company

Any help appreciated please as I am complete novice. I have been offered work by a company in Bermuda, but it will be home based from here in the UK. How would I go about paying tax? Should I register as self employed? Would I have to pay in Bermuda? I have no idea!

  • You would pay tax in the UK, but whether under PAYE or self employed depends on the terms of your contract. You need to ask your employer to take professional advice here, contacting HMRC if necessary.
  • thanks Gertie, i think it may have to be done as self employed as i am led to understand that they will just give me two or three lump sums for the work over the period of one year.
  • The method of payment does not inform the status of the job. They need to take advice
  • It would help to have some idea of the services you will be supplying.
I would think the status of one of its minor suppliers in some foreign land is of no interest what so ever to the customer.
This is what we offer; if you don't like it we will try out sourcing it to India?
Don't bother to send us an invoice, we will self bill in accordance with our contract?
Surely it is the supplier's job to sort out the bureaucracy in his home country?
[There might be scope to establish a mutually beneficial contract as the relationship progresses, if there are significant future inputs registering for VAT could become an issue. For example purchasing air tickets in the UK rather than in Bermuda, as they might be cheaper here]
  • must be insurance you are involved in. Trying to get the 9% rate?
i buy houses ........... any condition.

I may be being a bit over-suspicious, but when you say that you will be working from home for a business based in Bermuda it looks a bit strange. Are you 100% sure that this is a genuine job, not a scam?

It's not a matter of choice whether you are employed or not.

Try using HMR&C's status indicator to work it out: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/calcs/esi.htm
  • I have been working for international (or more technically correct multinational) companies since the 1960's.
The reality is that we now have a global market available to all.
    The classic example is Ebay.
If the British government (& HMRC) think they can keep their finger in the dike, all they will do is strangle British enterprise, and allow the wealth, that only business can create, bleed away from this European off shore island to more friendly, cheaper and less bureaucratic countries.
This BBC business programme explains it better than I ever could:
