Don't take this the wrong way, but the competency questions are there for a reason.
If you are unable to answer them on your own, then perhaps this wouldn't be the correct career choice for you?

If you do want to continue on this path, then I can only suggest that you read each question individually, and look for what they are actually asking. What you read isn't necessarily what you think it is.

I apologise for sounding negative, but if you're failing at the initial testing stage, how will you cope on the job?

Whatever you decide, best of luck with it anyway.

in the civil service when you have to complete a c.v with a competency you have to give a worked example.

    e.g.

    managing people:
you have to start off by explaining the problem you faced.
you have to explain how you dealt with this,
then explain what the result was.

this is true for most competencies and the briefer it is whilst holding a lot of detail is the key (easier said than done, trust me)

He sounds just perfect for the modern Plod to me.:rotfl:
  • As above, interviewers will soon tell if you had help completing the form. When doing a similar application I was advised to use the following to ensure that all the points were covered:

    http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/compet/skillquest.htm

    HTH
Married MSE style (sort of) 9/10/10 :j
  • to be honest i would not even bother trying. my patrner was in the met police for 5 years had a year out and then applied for essex police.
you would think with 5 years experience he would stand a good chance.
he completed the application and was told he was not competent enough to be considered..... we know the real reason as to why he did not get through to the next stage.
and it is called POSITIVE ETHNIC RECRUITING. this was confirmed from other officers in the met and this is not a racist comment by any means.
sorry for sounding negative but good luck in what you do.

Have you not thought of going down to your local police station and informally chatting to some of the officers down there. the force needs recruits with initiative to work and find information out on their own as well as work within a team. As long as you are aware that the job is not the glamour the posters and adverts give then you will be OK. I actually know 3 police officers who cracked due to the stress of the job, only one is still in the force. Good luck with your application I hope you do well :)
