Would a new mattress be any better..?

Hi
I bought a slatted deb from feather and black about 4 years ago, similar to this one:
http://www.featherandblack.com/Beds/Standard-Upholstered-Beds/Cameron-Standard-Bed.ice
I have suffered from hip and back pain for years and was really keen to try a memory foam to try to help it.
We bought their own brand memory foam mattress - which is about 6 inches of spongy foam with about 3 inches of memory foam on top. This is contained in a tight fitting (which seems to restrict the give) zip up cover.
When I get in from work and lay back on it, it instantly relieves my back and is comfortable.
However, every monring a wake tight and achey. I am not sure whether this is just me or whether another mattress would assist??
What really got me thinking was when slept recently on the old (now very old mattress) which was a cheap sprung one - and felt better in the morning! Maybe coincidence!?
My wife does find the mattress gets hot - but not bad enough to warrant a change.
Started looking and again found that they all relieve my back when trying them out so hard to compare - and so many types!!
Help please.

Think what that waffle is saying is...
not totally happy with mattress but not sure whether it is just my back will stiffen overnight.
but have been put off memory foam because of it - but all online advice for bad backs seems to be memory foam!!0 -
any views before this disappears!!!0

I had memory foam but found it too warm so I now have pocket spring with latex on the top. Lovely and comfy and no overheating problems.

thanks.
my understanding is that latex is pretty similar to memory foam but doesn't get as hot?
Do the pocket spring underneath (assuming latex is similar to memory foam) make much difference to the feel/ comfort?
Which bed did you go for?0 -
Rest assured Rossini 1000 pocket springs with latex top. Very comfortable and a lot cooler than the previous memory foam I had before.
I bought it from a local bed shop who had it on display so I could try it out and they beat the lowest price I could find on the internet.

thanks. Was the main difference the heat - or was it different in support / comfort etc?
My trouble is, with tight back, if I try out a bed of nails it feels suddenly soothing and good - so unless I spend a few nights on it they feel the same!
Appreciate some offer returns but would like to get it right first time!0 -

Without speaking to you and going into detail it would be impossible to tell what is causing the problem. You don't want to spend out on a new mattress if the money would have been better spent on a good osteopath. However a mattress with reflex foam under the memory foam won't give anywhere near as good support as one with pocket springs and memory foam.0 -
Thanks.
Don't worry money has been spent on osteopaths / chiropractors / physios!!
I leaning towards changing for a mattress with springs rather than my lump of foam - but it has made me a bit negative towards memory foam and am even considering just pocket sprung.
Not sure if it is summarised elsewhere but what are the key difference is feel/comfort of latex v memory foam?0 -

Is your mattress one of Feather & Black's own brand mattresses. And if so, do you know anything about the specifications, as they say nothing about them on their site?
I wouldn't be put of memory foam by a reflex foam and memory foam mattress. The layer under the memory foam is very important for providing support, and reflex foam gives no better support than open coil springs. Also with reflex foam the bubbles can start to burst over time, leaving a dip in the mattress. This can curve your spine. With pocket springs they all work independently contouring to your body, and providing even support. However pocket springs can still cause pressure points, which is what memory foam or latex foam eliminates.
As far as the level of support goes, there isn't much difference between memory foam and latex foam. However as you know memory foam is very slow reacting. But latex foam has much more bounce. Latex also has a much cooler feel.
You have to be careful with mattresses that contain latex foam though, as I mentioned in the other thread that you posted in about the rest assured mattress.0 -

The differences were indeed the heat but I also find it very comfortable, like laying on a cloud. Put it this way, I would never in the past retire to bed if I felt unwell, now it's the first place I head for.
I don't suffer badly with my back just occasionally but I was suffering from a bad hip that use to hurt more when I laid down, but now it hardly ever bothers me.
