Can my bosses do this?

Hi all,
i work for a project on an as and when basis, have been there for nearly two years, and they would ring me frequently asking me to go in and work. I have decided to start looking for a new job in Jan, however applied for one now, and decided to tell them. Since then I have noticed I haven't been offered anywhere near as much work. If I was to get the job I'd applied for I'd still be giving my one month's notice and the work is on an hour by hour basis so wouldn't really affect them. Well today I spoke to my mamager who when I said I had noticed I wasn't getting as much work she said: "Well you told me and x that you are looking for a full time job" Surely that's irrelevent, I have applied for one job, haven't heard anything yet and haven't given in my notice, can they do this. How can it be allowed that just because i'm one day planning to leave?

Write to them saying that you have withdrawn your search for full time work as it was not your intention to do anything which would affect your work with them.

If you want a reference from them for your new job, ask your (potential) new employers not to contact them before the interview - that way they will not be contacted unless you are actually offered the new job. (This is a very common request).
Yes, they can do this. But it's not very fair, is it? - so you need to maintain confidentiality your end, and be less open to them about what's going on. The course of action above should help!

What do you expect, they think you're moving on maybe sooner, rather than later.lil'H wrote:How can it be allowed that just because i'm one day planning to leave?
They're moving on as well.
Unfortunately you said too much & should've have kept quiet.
It's a golden rule, you don't(avoid) discuss looking for a new job while still in your
old job, as it can affect work/reference situation.
They've got to earn money/run business/get work done & need to plan for future & that's what they've started doing.
They're planning a future without you.

Thank you so much everyone, think reality check has hit in now! After I had spoken to my manager on the phone earlier, the big boss rang me, went on and on at me for ages, I just said there is no problem, I was just querying why less work was in. Anyway she phoned me about four times ranting, and then had the cheek to basically demote me! The only work I will be doing for them now is the position below mine, working underneath people that I trained up. I should also add that I am actually the most requested member of staff within the project, and am the one called in to rescue things when there is a chance we could loose a contract. At first I thought they were trying to avoid me still having access to the clients in case I poached them off, however now that I can have work in a lower position I am still getting access to the clients. It's a right mess, I just thought I was doing the right thing by being open and up front, learnt my lesson there!!!
