Morning everyone
I would love some recommendations on house removals as I've never had to do this before.
The trouble is, I don't have an awful lot to move, so not sure if the big companies will touch me. Also it's going a long way, so not sure if the local ones will be interested either!!!!
Also does anyone know if companies will keep hold of goods for you for a couple of days?
Many thanks for any thoughts, advice, or war stories of what to beware of

I too, am moving - and as it is likely to be weekday I'm short of muscle, as everyone who could help is working.
Check your local papers for ads for a 'man with a van'. If you live in a Friday-Ad area you might find quite a few.
I've decided to do this once my moving date is known. It works out much cheaper. Many will offer themselves for just an hour or 2 or as long as you need them for an hourly rate. Some will also do short notice bookings.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the insurance side of things - what happens regards breakages? Might be worth checking with your contents insurer.0 -
Thanks Ice. Hadn't really considered the Man with Van scenario as I'm moving 400 miles. Might be worth a few phone calls though. Will give it a try. Must look up the contents insurance too!! ::)No reliance should be placed on the above.0

The only thing with "man with van" is to check that they will take all your stuff and that it will all fit in. When I moved they turned up with a smaller van than they had said and then tried to say that I hadn't mentioned this cupboard or that place under the stairs when telling them how much stuff I'd got. Best if you can get them round to have a look first if you have time.Torgwen..........

Hi MA Re Removal
we have been a removal Co. for 70 years a man & van are fine until u need a claim they usually say i did the job half price tuff! pay up, or the one 6 months ago turned up with a van that was 'too small' a 300 mile job
he just walked away, we had to rescue the lady and took her to Cornwall, the others sometimes use a trailer behind a trany van, or the telephone call 'ive been waiting for a man & van 9hrs can you help?, the list is endless. Big firms could ask for £2400 or more try a firm that is part of FIRST or ROARS removals associations & they should give a written contract which will give U more security & usually a more reasonable price. Get 3 prices.
A BIG TIP ask the solicitor to read your search when it comes back & not to leave it untill the week of the move, they always find a problem! and cancell the move for a week, you think these guys are professional, they leave it all to the last minute and loose me usually 5 days work EVERY MONTH
and cause you all the upset that you dont need.0
