We went to Cairns last November thanks to GMTV (RIP) and Netflights. It's beautiful.
Peter Andre went there in his tv program tonight - look out for the rerun on itv2 this week.
If you want any tips of where to go in Cairns message me.
Also, I'm assuming you are flying in via Sydney, have you thought of asking Netflights to extend your departure dates and paying yourself to stay in a hotel there for a few days. We did and they were very happy to.

I don't know what your trip includes, but if you can afford it, I'd recommend a short trip to one of the islands on the Great Barrier Reef
I was lucky enough to go once when I was working in Australia for a few weeks and took some time off to go to Heron Island - simply stunning
