I'm not sure where the best place to post this query is - please feel free to move to a more appropriate place.
My tooth broke off and I had a crown fitted onto a post, it came off within days and I had it re-fitted asap in June 2010. It has come so loose it slides up and down the post now. I have an appointment to go back to the dentist next week.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows if I'll have to pay for this - the receptionist says I probably will, but if it only lasts 4 months does this mean it isn't fit for purpose? I'd expect a crown to last longer than this.
I'm trying my best to be careful with the pennies - but life keeps throwing these little problems my way LOL

Do you want to make a complaint?
If the dentist was NHS contact the patient advice and liaison service : www.pals.nhs.uk
If the dentist was private then four months is not reasonable, so you could take him to court to get your money back, or if you want to complain, go the the dental complaints service on 0845 612 05400 -

It's NHS and I paid £195 for it - last one I had done must be about 15 years and still going strong - this didn't even make 15 weeks LOL
I just want to be ready with an answer should he charge me as the receptionist suggested. Knowing my luck it'll have just run out of the guarantee!!!
Thanks for the help everyone I'll try PALS

For NHS treatmnet you should have been provided with a form to sign called an FP17DC. You get a copy of this and on the back it details the NHS guarantee.
If you google "fp17dc dental guarantee" The top link is the DOH website and the first link down is this form and what it says.
Basically it should be under guarantee (on a like for like basis) unless it was temporary, not advised or accidental damage.
Just to warn you..It is a know problem with post crowns that often there isn't much tooth left for them to stick on too and the second time round there is even less!1 -
Hi
I'm having a similar problem but my dentist has ensured me that I will not have to pay as everything is guaranteed for 12 months.DMP mutual support thread member:3270 -
I wouldn't go chasing off to PALS just yet.
Speak to your dentist first.
Post crowns are the most unreliable of restorations, and they're often the last thing that can be done to a tooth before you have to have it out.
If the crown has failed so soon, it might be because what was left of the tooth wasn't up to it. But either way, the dentist will probably come up with some sort of offer n the fee.
Give her a chance. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.1
