That's what i end up doing, as i don't often find any actual vintage clothes to fit me, my waist isn't nipped in enough :(
So vintage patterns in floral fabric works out rather well, and I love the fact I can make clothes which actually fit :)

As an example of the difference in sizing I went shopping this morning and bought a pair of very baggy size 12 jeans from Miss Selfridge I bought a size 12 because I wanted them to hang a lot, I'm normally an 8. I also bought a pair of Versace white skinny high waisted jeans, I didnt try either pair on in the shop but when I got home the Miss Selfridge jeans fit me on the waist:( but I wanted them to be too big and the Versace jeans fit perfectly in the waist and hips but the legs are too wide so they are not skinny at all:mad:, I know I should of tried on in the shops but come on, two completley different sizes both fit me in the waist?
Thank you for this site Martin

Before you get too down about sizes don't forget that pre-1960 women wore corsets and panty girdles. That's why the waists are small.
  • In the 70s I was a 14. Now I'm a stone and a half heavier and I'm a 12. Sizes are definitely bigger. Back in the 70s a 32 bust was a 10, a 34 was a 12 and a 36 was a 14. Hips were generally the same as bust and waist was 10" smaller. Women started getting more 'busty' because of the Pill and it all went downhill from there and when we threw our corsets and girdles away...

I read a book that said marliyn monroe was a size 12/14(which she dose look it) but the book then went on to say "but shed be a size 8 now"-there is no way in hell she would be not with those curves.. i like her shape.
  • Prior to the 1950's there was rationing so that would have kept people's weights right down.

I also sometimes think weight, size and shape do not correlate like textbooks or magazines, reason being is i've generally since being late teens i'm now 37 a weight of 9 to 9 and a half stone and always maintained a size 8-10.

I'm athletic build so attribute the weight to the muscle, i am very lean and straight up and down...no curves whatsoever :(. Smaller boobs than Kate Moss :D and i would love boobs and a waspie waist like in the 50's.

    I was 6 1/2 stone between 1969 and 1974 and was a size 12 with a 24" waist.

I had three children. One in 1969 and another in 1971, and my weight increased to 7 1/2 each time. The third child was born in 1974 and I went to 8 stone. After each pregnancy I went back to 6 1/2 stone in a couple of weeks.

I'm still a size 12, but unfortunately I am no longer at that weight or waist measurement!

I have kept clothes from that time, so I can show people the difference between the 12 in the sixties and the one we have now.

I would love to have the 1950's measurements for my height! I don't know if it is because I have been "bigger" than I want to be since my teens but I always thought that I should be a lot smaller to suit my height.

There must be women nowadays that do have those measurements though surely as there are 0 and 00 sizes in America.

  • I definately think that the war played a part in womens sizing-sugar was in short supply as with everything else so all those things that put weight on the stomach such as fizzy pops etc werent consumed.
odd though that the 20,s was a straight up and down look!
