Nationwide - totally unhelpful!!

Dear all,
I know that to take a payment holiday from a mortgage is usually not recommended but I am due to start my maternity leave next week and strongly believe in spending time with baby for as long as I can. Despite all this I can only really pursue a 6 month maternity release and this will even so leave me with 3 months of extremely low money. As the main earner I am concerned that I will have to return to work early. I rang Nationwide to ask for their advice and to see about a payment holiday, they said that I owed 84% on my mortgage and would only consider 80% or under. I explained that I was contacting them in advance to try to resolve the matter before it becomes a problem but they would only insist on labelling me as having financial problems and were totally unhelpful!! I have had so many problems with Natonwide and once back at work will be trying to move from them a.s.a.p. but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of what I could do to get through the 3 months at the end of my maternity??
Thanks all!

    Use your credit card.

A mortgage is not a personal loan or credit facility.

I do sympathise with your situation. But its not up to the Nationwide to bail you out.

Sorry to be harsh, but you do have financial problems if getting into authorised arrears is your only option. Go onto Debt Free Wannabee for help in managing your reduced budget.

    Thanks Thrugelmir,
I totally agree that it is not their responsibility to bail me out, it was only that I had been told previously that I could do it and I felt that at least I was trying to solve the problem in advance instead of ignoring the problem. I had considered credit cards which may be the way to go. Thanks for your advice. xx

    Hi Beecher 2,
When you salary goes from £3014 for the first month only then gradually down to £499 for the last 2 months of your maternity and your mortgage is £945 a month you cant help it if you have concerns. I don't consider this financial problems, just the downside of having a baby and taking maternity leave!

I think if it is a financial problem if you can't cope with it - if you had savings it wouldn't be a problem.
