BTW, fwiw the stations between Derby and Nottingham are:

    Derby - Spondon - Long Eaton - Attenborough - Beeston - Nottingham

If you look at the constitutents of Derby Group routeing point and Nottingham Group routeing point here: http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/group_stations.pdf

then Derby includes Spondon and Long Eaton, and Nottingham includes Attenborough and Easton.

These stations, aside from Nottingham and Derby themselves are not major stations, but the purpose of this is that it's permitted to double back between stations PROVIDING they are all members of the same routeing group, and the doubling back is being done 'for interchange purposes'.

So as an example, with a ticket London - Derby, you can take a train to Nottingham and then catch a Nottingham - Derby train, even though the train from London will pass through (check the map
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/passenger_services/maps/nationalrailnetworkmapZoom.pdf) Beeston and Attenborough (but probably not stop), and so will the Nottingham - Derby train, because the doubled back stations are part of the Nottingham group

And, you can 'break' your journey at Nottingham (break of journey is for most ticket types permitted), and there's no requirement to ever complete it.
  • @thelawnet: Superb explanation!

If you hit the 'slower routes' button some cheaper fares should come up - less than half the default

You may have to book outward and return journeys as separate queries

Get a ticket valid for just over a month, so start on Monday and finish on Friday. Works out around £9/day.

Unfortunately if they've increased the price of the Advances, there's not much you can do.

    Br fares possibly?
    http://www.brfares.com/

They don't sell tickets. It's a place to find ticket prices. You can buy the tickets from a train company, e.g., Virgin, Southern, East Midlands, etc., or at your local station.

    http://www.topcashback.co.uk/southern-railway/

for cashback and Southern will sell you any ticket, and you can collect at the station

If you want a specific ticket that you've found on BR fares, and you can't find the same ticket searching on a train company website, then you will need to ask at your station, or you can try by phone also.
