Silver jewellery -where to sell??

Desperately need to make some extra money this month as OH has had no work and there is no money to pay rent/food etc. Car tax due the end of the month (and I need it to get to work and collect the step kids etc).

Selling some stuff on ebay but where can I sell a load of my silver jewellery? Ebay hasn't been successful as all the imports I assume.

Should I take it to a jeweller's shop in the high street and ask them if they will buy it? Never done that before. Any one any tips?

Are they likely to give me a low price?

If not, what is worse.... missing a complete cc payment or only paying part of it? Or going over my overdraft limit - which will hit my credit rating more?? :o

A jeweller will only give you the value of the metal. All the work that's gone into making it, the design the settings etc that you paid for in the retail price is ignored by them.

I'd take it to a couple of shops to get it valued first.

You may find that the smaller, privately-owned, jeweller will be more interested than the High Street 'chain' jewellers. I did see, on one of those 'cash in the attic' type programmes, about a month ago, that silver is not a good price at the moment.

Yeah sorry that was the sort of jeweller I meant, the smaller ones in the high street. :o

Thanks for the comments. Doesn't look like I'm gonna get anything much for them then? Will try at lunchtime as there's about 15 rings, some bracelets and bits. Wish I hadn't spent all that money on them in the first place now. :o

Anyone any other advice on this?

You could try taking them to a local auction house, especially if any of the stuff is old. You should get a pretty fair valuation, although you will have to pay commission to the auction house if the items sell. You'd probably be best submitting it to a general sale, unless some of it is of more value.

The posters above are right - I used to work for an independent jeweller and we would only buy silver for 'scrap' price, by weight, and for silver it doesn't work out at much at all. We did buy some second hand jewellery to sell but it tended to be very unusual pieces only and very little silver. Maybe even though prices aren't good on Ebay you would do better there because at least you have a chance of a buyer who is interested in the design etc. and willing to pay for it?

Alternatively, you could go to 'Cash Converters', if you're really desperate. You'll get a rock-bottom price, but i think you have the option to buy stuff back if you really don't want to part with it. Personally wouldn't go for this, but it's another option.

Be sure you want to sell them before you go ahead - if they have any sentimental value really think about it first.

Don't get your hopes up about how much you'll get. A couple of years ago I took some gold jewellery to see how much I would get. The retail cost would have been about £350 total and this was years ago - but the most any shop offered was £35. I decided not to sell.
  • I was surprised how much I got for some old silver jewellery at a car boot sale once, I thought it wouldn't go but it did. Worth a try?

At a jewellers you'll be very disappointed. A few years ago I had to sell my wedding and engagement ring to pay for an op for my dog (sound FX: violin). I was divorced so it wasn't such a huge thing as it sounds. most jewellers were not interested and the one who took them gave me £350 for nearly £2000 worth of stuff :(

Yeah good point. Maybe I'll try ebay again for now as it looks as if it's gonna be pointless walking all that way in the rain for a few pence.

There isn't any sentimental value in them, I bought them all myself  None of them are ancient or anything valuable like that.

    Thanks everyone.

I would do a car boot sale ....but I can't stand early mornings!! :o Have friends that regularly do boot sales though so might have a chat and speak about them selling some and keeping a bit of the cash.

Might try a few of them together as a bulk buy on ebay and see if that goes any better. ;)
