I agree, but could this be the precursor to implementing some kind of marriage related tax relief?

which is equally ridiculous as it would reward the partner who runs off and remarries and penalise the partner who through no fault of their own is left divorced /single.

The other end of this has just been announced - a cap on total benefits so that a family on benefits cannot have more in total benefits than the average family earns from working.

I assume they will be taking into care some of those kids from very large families living on benefits? for a start they won't be able to afford then rent.

I think we all agree that very large earners don't need CB, that low income families probably do and that the people in the middle will suffer as the cut off always seems to hit at the point where people on benefits tend to do better than those who work.

It will be hard for people who are caught at the edge of the cut off who rely on the money.

While not diminishing their loss, they do have two year's notice to make adjustment.

I liked the idea of tax credits, which another poster mentioned.

Why not just roll it up into that?

I realise tax credits themselves are a nightmare, when it comes to administration, but would make more sense than one family losing out severly over another.

I didn't know half of these benefits existed, especially not the amounts before I frequented this board.

What will the cap be at exactly, have they said? does it include housing?

Would the best thing not to just have all benefits for workers as tax relief?
