This service is only available to "those who qualify". This means basically you have to be in one of the groups which already qualify for an eye examination paid for by the NHS & sufficiently disabled to be unable to travel to a local practice.
Furthermore in my experience the accuracy of the test may be hit or miss as the person carrying out the visit can carry only limited equipment and has no control of the test enviroment eg lighting etc.
Problems can also occur if the spectacles need further adjustment after delivery - does the seller offer to call round as required for the next 2 or 3 years ?
This is a service which is great for those who genuinely need it but with the advent of disabled rights most practices can accommodate wheel chairs etc.0 -
I think it would be great for an elderly or disabled loved one that has to depend on others to take them places. I don't feel there's anything to "beware" of.0

Having had two similar (well the same actually) experiences with the Outside Clinic, I would like to warn people. Yes, they do a thorough eye test, yes it is free for those that qualify or £20 for those that don't. The downside is that there is a lot of pressure to buy, very expensive, spectacles. The forms you complete tell you that you have paid a 'deposit' rather than actually paying for a simple eye test. They follow up visits with letters telling you that your specs have been made up (even though you explicity told them you weren't ordering) and you have to actively cancel any orders. DO NOT leave any elderly/vunerable people to deal with this company alone. We felt very pressured into buying and I'm sure a lot of people do pay when they can't actually afford it.0

Here's the site:
http://www.outsideclinic.com/services.asp
It says:
"The Outside Clinic home visiting service is free, and sight-tests are free to all those patients who qualify. There is a free range of spectacles available to those who qualify. There is a free range of spectacles available to those who are in receipt of appropriate benefits. "
