Tivo was way way ahead of its time and I speak as someone who bought one on the second day of its release and used it for five years.
I got the media centre last year (damn sight cheaper than a Tivo was, £305 delivered from Dell) and another £80 for 4 freeview tuners (from ebay).
I then use an Xbox 360 as a MCE extender (I already had the Xbox for games).
The picture quality is far far better than Tivo (even on mode 0) on my LCD TV, I can record four things at once, it never misses a channel change, it never crashes (though I have set it to re-boot once a week just in case). I can also encode shows to Divx very fast compared to the video extraction and conversion on the Tivo.

I take you point on picture quality and muliple tuners but it sounds like you are a bit more techno savvy than the average TV viewer. For someone like you, MCE may well make more sense. The Tivo on the other hand is designed for people who just want to watch the tele.0 -

OK you have definitely got me there!!, I got Tivo's for my parents, my grandmother (85 at the time) and my aunt and uncle after they'd seen mine. All of them had struggled with video recorder timers and constantly missed programmes etc.
After each of them had had the Tivo's for over two weeks, they never ever phoned me with any problems. The're all still going strong 4 years later and none of them watch live TV anymore.0 -

Just got a Matsui M802PVR Dual tuner for the OH mum's b-day from Currys.
Rebadged from Access Devices, and well thought of, while being quiet and reliable, with the only downside being some nitpicks about the EPG, but what can you expect at this price?
Originally £149.99 in the sale to £119.99, using a 10% E-voucher, took it down to £107.99 plus delivery.
Can't argue with that!0
