Student Loan repayment

My son has finished his studies at university. I am disabled and he is claiming carer's allowance. He would like to claim Income Support, but has £8000 savings. Can he pay the £8000 to the student loans company and after that claim income support? He will not be able to go to work for a long time. Thanks in advance.

no, that's deprivation of capital. he'll need to live off his savings for a bit. I'd post on the benefits board to see if there are any other things he may be entitled to if he has a condition that stops him working.
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.
  • Thank you Emmzi. I've posted in the Benefits forum.

I disagree. If he's paying off his own debts he is not depriving himself of anything.

I would certainly post this one on the benefits forum for clarity, rather than take my word for it, but I am 99% sure that it's an option that remains open to him.
  • Hi Opinions4u, I think that you are probably right. I have posted it in the benefits forum and was told that my son cannot pay the dept. However, my reasoning is that if they do not ask you when applying for Incomu Support benefit if you have recently paid any depts, then it should be fine. I think that my only option is to phone the DWP.
