Where do I get bits for Coal Fire......

Options
I am thinking of using my coal fire this winter, but all I have is an empty grate with an electric fire in front of it. The fire hasn't been lit since I moved in 4 years ago, and god knows how long before that, as it was occupied by an elderly couple. Does anyone know where I get the thing that you set the coal on and the tray underneath (and their proper name please) etc. Also is there a special fireprooof type paint you can use for the surround, or where do I get the tiles to tart it up with. One other thing, I would also need a Chimney Sweep if anyone knows of one in the Newtownabbey area. Thanks

    Hi,
If I were you I would try the Yellow pages which has a large section on chimney sweeps (pick one who is a member of the Northern Ireland Chimney Sweep Association) and ask them for advice on what sorts of bits of pieces your coal fire will need in order to make it useable and safe.
They should also know places where you can buy things for your fire. I would ask the advice of a professional before attempting to do anything much to it!

  • You'll get the grate, ashpan etc etc from a hardware shop . Got one in Munn's on the Lisburn Road in Belfast last year, think it was about £35. They should be able to sort you out with the paint etc if you need it.
