Hello all, I'm generally a bit of a lurker but I get lots of inspiration from this thread & I wanted to share this creation which I made for a friend's birthday. I plan to recreate it as gifts for various difficult-to-buy-for people at Christmas.
It is a set of coasters, created on tiles, made from parts of maps. I chose places which have meaning - you can see the places Grace's Walk, George's Wood etc? Well these are the names of people in my friends family, so its a very personal set.
If you'd like to know how I did it, just let me know! PS How do you make the picture smaller?

Yes please how did you do that - they are really clever! Well done you

well here goes...i started with plain white tiles which were the right size then i went onto www.streetmap.co.uk and typed in the name that I wanted to appear on the coaster. Then I chose a map to use from the results. Then I made moved the arrow (there is a 'move arrow' button) which highlights the road/street/place because I didn't want it to appear on the finished image. The map that appears will be made up of lots of image files - it looks like a grid. I right-clicked on the individual square which i wanted and saved the image. Then I printed it out onto white tissue paper. To do this it is the trickiest bit - there are some tutorials on youtube on 'how to print onto tissue paper'. Then I cut the image to fit the coaster. Then I used PVA glue to glue the tissue to the coaster. Then I used a spray-varnish to seal it & make it waterproof & heatproof. Not too difficult but just time consuming. I used some adhesive-backed cork to back them, so they don't scratch surfaces when they are used. You can use felt which does the same job.
The one thing that I was prepared for, is that the glue made the ink run a little on the tissue paper, but to be honest it gives it a really rustic look which I've come to like, but I think if I was more careful and used a lot less glue I could have avoided it.

    Morning!
The good bit....I found some perfect candy canes in the 99p Store at the weekend :D Not quite certain what I will do with them yet, but I'll think of something! :j
The no-so-good bit.....I ordered some "Cadbury's Dairy Milk Chocolate Chunk Miniatures" from Milk and More which were delivered this morning with the milk. I had been really chuffed that I'd saved myself a trek round the shops....but t'was not to be. Just taken delivery of them and they aren't the little square-wrapped bars, they are twist-wrapped. So I am miffed. Harrumph.
The amusing bit.......I found a "recipe" for a small knitted snowman in Knit and Crochet and asked Mum to knit one for me (I only crochet). So she set about it, and an hour later I was the proud owner of........lop-sided snowman with a demonic expression and a pompom as big as his hat. Mum and I roared laughing when we put him next to the illustration in the mag :rotfl:

I just raked in the craft boxes and found a brown pipe cleaner which I cut in half, it looks like birds feet sticking up :rotfl:

I cannot remember for the life of me how to put pictures on or I would have, my DD just said "mum christmas is aaaages away yet" ;)

Hehe now you've said that ......:p I try to make things perfect but tbh I shouldn't worry as my reindeer are for the DDs they aren't really going to slate me for it

Hya folks...well, it's that time again...the mad Xmas Make is now well underway!!

I managed to get some half-price E-S chocs on Sat from Mr M: milk-mint and milk-butterscotch!! Also got some choc pennies to use as well...doing a big fair at the end of Nov (7 weeks yesterday!!), so hope to sell a fair few there. Also got Xmas canes for £1 a box @ Mr M...not sure how I have used them yet.

I have been knitting Xmas decs lately, will post a piccie once I have finished them (adding beads etc).

Need to track down some reduced Dove bars...got a good deal last year in Savers...will have a look on Wed when I am next out shopping. Got loads of beige/brown/cream facecloths from D-Mill months ago on offer, want to wash them to fluff them up before using them. Also need to head to the florist wholesalers for a new roll of cellophane...nearly finished my last roll last year :o

Right, off to the craft room.....I may not escape for weeks!!!

Blimey you lot have been busy. Not had chance to come on for a week or so and have missed loads of pages!!!.

Love the tile coasters they are fab well done (sorry can't remember who posted them and i have only just read it too!!). I tend to use modpodge for doing similar things which means you don't have to do gluing then varnishing as its both in one. Can be pricey though.

Cuddles fab advent calender and i love the traffic cones...

Here's a couple of things i have made so far....
