Help..'Lost' a Word Document!

Hopeing someone can help me here,
I'm working on my Masters dissertation and my supervisor sent me some comments in a word documnet attached to an email on wedneaday.

I stupidly started working on it from the email without saving it to my own drive... worked on it for 3-4 hours and then closed it down (can't remember being prompted to save etc) went to open it again yesterday and can't find it!!!

Have gone back into the email and its still the orgainally that is attached (without the changes I made) , have run a search of all file (including hidden ones etc) and no sign of it?

I'm using Vista if that makes any difference.

Anyone any idea if there is any way I can find my missing document or do I just need to put it down to experience and redo and not be so stupid in future!!!

Thanks
AJ

Open up the email attachment again in word and then do file -> save as and see the directory path that the email is using. Navigate to that directory and go through the word files there. Don't go by name as the file is likely to be something obscure.

If it has been saved at all it will be in there, if it hasn't been saved then I'm afraid you've had it

Just a chance and a very very very small one that you saved it in the drafts folder of your email client .

    I've been Money Tipped!
Open Word, click on "file", scroll down and you'll see te last 4 files you saved. If it was saved it'll be on the list, if not then...

Glad I learned this lesson 3 weeks into my dissertation and not 3 months!!!

Many thanks again for your help

Vista has an extremely good search function. Click on the start icon and in the search box type in some key words you think will be in the document. It'll then go off and search files, documents and emails (inc attachements) for those key words.

    Search for .tmp files.

There is a small chance Word auto saved a temporary version and didn't delete it.

It is a small chance but worth a try.

Edit: .tmp is what my very old Word 97 used under XP.

It may be different for more recent Word version and Vista.
  • if you opened a word document from email, then saved it, then closed out of word,
in outlook if you closed the email, and it prompts you to save ,and you say no, it doesnt save the word document (even though you saved it)
