car an insurance write off

  • sorry to put a spanner in the works here... am just speaking from an unfortunate experience

i put a claim in for a small dent on one of my previous cars... having found out how much it was going to cost £200 with £100 excess - i told them to forget about it and i would get it sorted myself

i managed to get someone to sort it for £80 :)

anyway, the next year i am insured with another company and my car is stolen

informs the insurance company etc and claim gets processed
only then to receive a letter advising that they wouldnt pay out because I hadnt disclosed a claim that i had had the year before !!!

when it all comes out - it seems that when you report something to your insurance company - it goes down as a claim regardless of whether you actually go through with it or not

    rather unfair me thinks

so just be careful that you disclose this "claim" when you apply for your next car insurance.
i believe when getting a quote - they ask if you received a pay-out on each claim

    hope u get sorted

I I told the insurance co, and got some quotes from the approved garages, which were massively inflated, and were listing things that didn't need replacing

    ahhh that brings back memories..

Garage whatever you do don't drive it

    Me Why?

Garage By the look of it the radiator could be damaged and pumping poisonous fumes into the car when you switch the air con / heating on.

    Me Nah it'll be ok

Garage NO!! you shouldn't drive it you could end up dead

Me Yeah but i crashed it 4 months ago.

    Garage Oh..... ok
  • Sunflower... i know exactly what you mean. Some silly old giffer pulled out in front of me and i went through a 3rd party company so insurance didn't gt involved... Cos i phoned the RAC to get the car picked up they charged it to my insurance company. Cos they charged that it's still going as a claim till the coffin dodger amits liability.
  • There is a simular thread to this one over on the motoring board. I'll reply here the same as there. We had a financial write -off due to a wiring fire, eventually we were paid out for the loss, less the cost of the van. We put it back on the road using parts from a scrapper. Then we submitted the MOT and eventually had the same insurance co reinsure it. They did try to get us to have an engineers report, but I insited that if the MOT tester is good enough for the Ministry of Transport, he should be good enough for them. They accepted.
The last thing I would have done in your position would have been involve the insurance company. If you make any kind of claim, trust me your insurance will go up. I also wouldn't have fully comp on a cheap car. I would have the car repaired (only if you feel you need to) by a small garage, and leave the insurance co out of it. Unfortunately it may be too late for this option. Write to them, enclosing a copy of a NEW MOT cert to prove the car is roadworthy, and tell them to withdraw the claim. As long as you have not accepted any money from them, the car is not thier property, nor should they have cancelled your insurance on it. Though I am not sure if they will have recorded the write off status somewhere, as the last writeoff we had was many years ago.
"Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"
