Hairdressers - Student night?

Options
Hi all,

I was wondering if there was any such thing as a list of hairdressing salons that have student nights? I would loooove my hair to be cut but I really can't afford it right now, but think I would maybe afford to have my hair done by a student as I think they just charge a nominal sum. I just don't know where to begin finding salons that occasionally offer this. I haven't had my hair cut for over a year and I need some smartening up, starting to look like a cavewoman! Thanks

I go to a local hairdressing college in Birmingham city centre, they are all closely supervised and a cut and blow dry costs £6. I have been going for years and never had a problem. If you have it done by third year (final year) students it is £9. I had a semi-permanent colour, cut and blow dry last week it cost £13.50 and that was with a final year student. There is probably a college near you.

Might be worth phooning some good local salons and ask if they do training. I go to a decent salon and do this, and the hair cuts are very good, if the student is very new they will be well supervised. I have mad, curly hair and cheaper salons often don't know how to cut it well (I've had a few experiences). In expensive salons the standard of training is usually quite high so I get a cheap haircut done well.l Not happy though that the price for a cut and blow dry is rising from £8 to £14.50, bit of a big leap, but still cheaper than the alternatives.

I have never heard of salons doing students nights- but do get my hair cut/coloured as a model and have done for some time. I go to hairdressing academies- I am lucky as I live in London and quite a few schools are based here but you could always try your nearest beauty college or colleges which run beauty courses.
I would also advise to look in the windows of salons as many will have 'Models Required' signs in which is normally hair done by a student for a cut price or for free.

when my mum wa younger she regularly went to the local college to be a hair model, just phone them up
  • Just to report back...I have had a look on the local college that does hairdressing courses, and can get all sorts of things at a great price..£5 for a cut and blow dry, I will book and report back just in case others are interested! They also have a beauty salon so may give that a go too, a Dermotologica Facial for £6.00 sounds pretty good. Thanks for everyone's advice :o)
