Groom speech - thoughts?

Hi folks, wondered if someone might be able to have a peek at my speech for my forthcoming wedding... any thoughts appreciated:

Thank you Ted for your kind words.

Ladies and Gentlemen, family and friends, on behalf of my new wife and I, thank you all for joining us today to celebrate our marriage. It’s a privilege to be in the company of so many people that are important in our lives and we’re delighted to welcome you here to share our special day with us. It’s great to see you all and I can honestly say it would not have been the same without you.

Events like today don’t just happen and we've been planning this wedding for some time now. Well, I say "we", Vicky actually did most of the work. One of the best things about being a man is that weddings seem to organise themselves. So to Vicky and everyone else who has helped organise today I would like to say a big thank you.

Now as is custom, there will be a few toasts during my speech, so please make sure you have a drink and don’t down it all at the first toast… not looking at any tables in particular......

First of all, unfortunately it’s not been possible to have everyone we love here with us today, but we know they’re here with us in spirit & they’re not only in our thoughts today, but more importantly they’re with us in our hearts.

So, with them in mind, would you please all stand, raise your glasses, & join me in a toast to absent family & friends.

Next on behalf of my wife and I, we would like to thank both sets of parents as we wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for them.
I have to thank Vicky’s mum and dad, Irene and Ted for bringing up such a beautiful, intelligent & caring daughter. Irene and Ted and not forgetting Claire and Dave, you have all made me feel like family from day one, and we would both like to thank you for your continuing support of everything that we do.

Next I would also like to thank my own mum & dad for their continued love, support and friendship. Thank you for raising me the way you did and for pointing me in the right direction. I am sure you will all agree with me that they did a fantastic job!

As a token of our appreciation we would like both mums to please accept these flowers….

That leads me on to the star of the today, my gorgeous new wife Vicky - I can’t even begin to tell you how absolutely stunning you look today. When I saw you coming up the isle I realized how lucky I am, I looked at myself and realized that it’s definitely me getting the best of this deal.

I’m sure you will all know that Vicky and I met in our first week of University – of all of the Universities in all of the world, the hand of fate took us both to Simon House in Southampton and we’ve never looked back. We’ve now been together for 11 years this weekend and in that time we have finished University together, travelled the world together, got our first proper jobs (if you can call Vicky's job that), bought our first house together and now finally we’ve become husband and wife together. Vicky, if we can squeeze all of that into 11 fantastic years then I can’t wait to see what the rest of our lives together hold for us.

Vicky, I love you in so many ways and for so many reasons, you know me and understand me like no one else ever could, you make me laugh so hard and smile so often, you have a way of bringing out the very best in me, but mostly because you’re my very best friend, my soul mate. I love you with all my heart. Thank you for marrying me and making me the happiest man alive and for loving me as much as I love you. I know this is the start of many more happy years together.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please be upstanding, for the most important toast I’m ever likely to make, TO MY WIFE AND MY BRIDE, TO VICKY.

Tradition now dictates that I now tell you an amusing story or two about Vicky. However, “her indoors” as I shall now be calling her, dictates that I do no such thing, but I will say this. In the 11 years that we have been together now I’ve learned a very valuable lesson.
Whenever I’m Wrong – I Admit It!!
Whenever I’m Right – I Keep Quiet!! And if you believe that you’ll believe anything.

Now on to our bridesmaids, Cheryl, Hannah, Marie and Sharon, i’m sure everyone will agree that you all look stunning today. Thank-you to all of you for your help and for being there for my new wife. I know how much support you have all given Vicky up to and including this day and I’d like to just ask everyone to raise your glasses and join me in a toast to "The bridesmaids”

We also have another big thank-you to the ushers Clive and Rich for helping to make today run so smoothly, Vicky and I never had any doubt you could do it. We would also like to thank Clive for all of his hard work in designing all of the wedding stationary for today, it looks fantastic so thank you.

Finally To my best man Robert. I personally, would like to thank you for agreeing to be my best man, I couldn’t have asked more from you so thank you.

Now for anyone who doesn’t know Robert, he has a habit of inventing random funny stories about people, so please feel free to heckle him during his speech and don’t believe a word he says.

That’s enough from me.

I would like to thank you all once again and hope you have a great evening.

It now gives me great pleasure to hand over to Robert.

Not sure if its too long, especially the lovey-dovey bit in the middle might be a bit OTT.

Not sure if I have got the right toasts in there either, only have one for "absent friends and family" and one for the bridesmaids... What about the mothers, family, ushers or best man?

Thanks in advance for any help....

aaww-I have a tear in my eye, it's lovely!
To be picky, I'd change around "To my wife and my bride" to "To my bride and my wife" as that's the order she has done it in (bride first, wife second-just!)
I don't know how you are with public speaking, but if you could manage not to have every word written down, then it would probably sound more natural than you reading it word-for-word from your piece of paper. If you're not too confident at the public speaking, then have it all written down in front of you if it makes you feel better!
    Good luck!

Lovely speech: not too long, funny but not inappropriate anywhere (i guess that's Robert's job though ;) ) just the right amount of lovey-dovey-ness. Maybe I'll show my h2be and tell him this is what he's aiming for :) interestingly he'd only have to tweek the names and the details slightly as we met at uni and are getting married on our 11 year anniversary :p
Congratulations (and I won't really make him steal you speech :rotfl:)
Hope and your wife you have a great day :D:D

    Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Laura, don't worry if he does want to... I took bits from templates online and also a few on here and then made it my own.
  • Your speech is great. Similar in some ways to the one my OH has written - he's not very good with public speaking, I cut his in half it was full of waffle! Yours seems really nice - not too soppy!

    Well done

Wodnt say overly long, maybe you could cut your bride part to more unique couple of lines.

The structure and content is similar to most speeches, the right and wrong jokes are over used as are the best man ones but its fine if you want to go with them.

All in all not bad at all

Don't forget to thank your wife, is she's anything like mine she'll have organised nearly the entire wedding :)

Trust me, she'll appreciate that you acknowledge her efforts to give everyone and you a good day.

Although the toasts are a traditional part of every wedding i think they are far too much over used
