Sainsburys hot dog style frozen veggie sausages are gorgeous. So easy too - just stick them in a pan of boiling water for five minutes or so, and they're ready. They make a lovely supper in a soft roll with ketchup or brown sauce.

I make shepherds pie with quorn and no one notices. Fry onion and quorn then add tin of campbells tomato soup fill empty tin with milk and add that too, add a tsp mixed dried herbs and top with mash. You can add mushroom and chopped carrots when frying the oinion and quorn too if liked.0

Realeat Vegemince is by far the best, and quite often Farmfoods have it in for £1 or £1.50 a bag.
The thing I like best about it is how much it swells - it soaks up loads of liquid making it stretch further. And it tastes way better than Quorn mince.0 -
I used to be veggie and liked the Realeat Vegemince. Like most veggie mince substitutes best cooked in something flavoursome like stock, tomatoes or water with a some marmite mixed in because it absorbs the flavour as it cooks.
I used to use dried TVP too sometimes. I think the Vegemince is much nicer of itself but the TVP is good if you re-hydrate it using hot stock or boiling water with marmite added for flavour and then cook it in a dish with plenty of other flavours or a well flavoured sauce. I made a very nice lasagne type pasta bake combining it with courgettes, onion, garlic, and peppers in a tomatoe sauce and layersing with pasta and a cheesy white sauce. It tasted really good because it was baked slowly so it had plenty of time to absorb all the other flavours. Intrinsically it is a bit like cardboard! It is very cheap though so I would tend to use it for slow cook dishes like the lasagne but use Vegemince for a fast supper.
I second Cauldron foods for the best veggie sausages. They're expensive but really very good. The texture is good and they have quite a sophisticated flavour IYKWIM. They use a good blend of herbs and spices. I'd put the Quorn ones in second place. They're OK, they have a very dense texture, more like Bratwurst than typical sausages, and taste of Quorn, but I like Quorn so that's OK by me. Trailing badly in last place comes Linda McCartney sausages. I know some people rave about this range but I really hate the texture. It tastes OK but everything seems to coat the roof of your mouth with this claggy layer of fat. These are one of the few things I actually will not eat.0 -
thanks for the tips on the veggie sausages - we are not veggie but I dont trust what they put into 'real' sausages and I do miss toad in the hole:p
Just a little tip for Quorn or Soya mince if you are not veggie cook it with an onion in a little oil then add a tin of Heinz Mulligatawnay soup to give flavour - it tastes gorgeous much better than mince and gravy.:cool: Official DFW Nerd Club Member #37 Debt free Feb 07 :cool:0
