If you personally aren't bothered - why bother? I have been married for nearly 30 years - we were very short of money when we decided to marry, so didn't get an engagement ring and I can honestly say it hasn't bothered me one jot. My wedding ring was very inexpensive, too, and in fact I hardly ever wear it these days (swollen knuckles) but I don't feel any less married.:D Oh, and OH doesn't wear a ring, either.

  • When I got engaged many many moons ago, I chose an enternity ring for my ring an it only cost us £50. Many people thought it was an antique and thought it cost loads more ;)

Also bought inexpensive wedding rings and they're still going strong!

My ring is a tanzanite on white gold (although there are little diamonds either side) and a few people have gone "Oh, it's not a diamond" when they've seen it. Who says it has to be a diamond? I wanted something different, and h2b chose it on his own with no input from me. I'd far rather have it that way than be like another girl i knew that banged on about wanting an enormous diamond for months and then marched her h2b down to the jewellers and chose it herself.

  • Twirly Pinky, I have a tanzanite with a diamond either side on white gold, OH chose this although I was with him its not what I would have picked but wanted it to be his choice. It wasn't too expensive, what we could afford in January this year. My question is, did you get it from SHamuals? How long have you had it? mine appears to be going slightly yellow and wondering if this is normal for white gold?

ok sorry, more than 1 question!

.... white gold will last and wear well....

Sorry to disagree, but it won't wear well - it will need to be replated, and if your lifestyle or job means it will get rubbed or washed regularly, then that replating could need to be as frequent as every 12 months. Try putting a 12 month old white gold engagement ring next to a brand new white gold wedding band in a jewellers & there may well be a difference in the colour & finish.

Someone who is a little jealous? Not sure about the tone in the post about teal shirts! But then I may be extra sensitive with a month to go! lol

Don't feed the troll! Leave them alone & they will get bored and go elsewhere.

Yes, the "white" is actually rhodium plating over yellow gold, so if your ring has a thin rhodium plating, it will slowly wear off to show the yellow gold underneath.

And before anyone asks, I am not a jeweller - I'm a secretary who has seen a white gold ring slowly go yellow on a friend's finger and was nosy enough to ask what had happened!
  • Thanks Floss, we got insurance when we got the ring, do you think its worth giving them a call and asking if they can do anything?

I am an admin assistant, so its not as though I am doing a very rough job.

Quite disappointed about it really, if we had wanted yellow gold we would have chosen it!

    Any suggestions?

yes, as someone said, white gold does require re-rhodium plating every now and then, as it's just that that makes the gold white.

However, i DO think they're hardwaring. Purely because of this coating.

I've had white gold jewellery before, and when it comes back from being replated it looks like new, because any surface scratches etc, are on the plating NOT the gold.

    smiles all round!

And in answer to the question from kdalwayskint, no, mine wasn't from Hsamuels, although i believe that if you buy a ring from there or the other one, Ernest jones, you can get the re-rhodium plating for free!
