Does anybody know the Ormeau rd area well?

Hope this question is ok to ask here (I'll flag it to moderators myself as soon as I post so they can check it), but need to ask a question about the area.

I just viewed a house (well, room) in the Ava st/parade/ave area of the Ormeau, really liked the house and the 2 current tenants seem really nice. Only possible issue is the large union jack flying a few yards away. this doesn't bother me overtly, I'm not bitter, or a tricolour flying person, I just get on with my life. However, I don't know the area well, and I don't want to find myself living in a staunchly unionist (or nationalist for that matter) area.

Long story short, is there any level of sectarianism or is it 1 harmless flag? I didn't notice grafitti or anything.

  • I think Ava Avenue flooded during the heavy rains couple of years back but I wouldn't worry about anything else in that area. If you like the place and the people are nice go for it. Have you spoken to them about the area? You are so near to a plethora of bars, shops, coffee houses, takeaways etc that it's a complete mix of people - day and night.
  • Thanks, that's reassuring. Had a feeling I was overreacting about the flag. Had it been a massive tricolour I'd have been the same.

  • Hiya, the Ormeau road is pretty mixed these days. There are some flags that go up over the summer and I'm sure these are left over from then. I have lived around Ava for the past 4 - 5 years and it is a good area. It's a 20 minute walk into town and there are some good bars/shops and restaurants all within walking distance.
  • I had a good friend who lived in ava avenue for years with an irish name and never had any problems at all... really wouldn't worry about it!

I'm English, but I work in Belfast and my colleague lives on the road. He's never had any problems at all. He likes the location to everywhere.
