1st Credit - Demanding letters

Im new to this forum but am unsure where else to go for advice on a problem that has arisen.
A few weeks ago I received a letter from 1st Credit demanding payment for a debt I generated in 1994 (unsure of exact date as I have trouble remembering what happened last week) with Lloyds TSB. I was young and foolish and didn't pay my debt which I believed I had in fact paid (again a long time ago). I have over the last 16 years heard nothing from Lloyds or any companies associated with them with regards to this debt but now I am being inundated with letters from 1st Credit and a Solicitors (LCS) on their behalf demanding this money. The debt is for £1700 and they are even sending automated phone messages to my Home and Mobile phone both of which are exdirectory and blocked.
My question really is if anyone can give any advice as to how I should proceed with this issue. I have spoken to friends who have stated that this is a debt that has been sold to a credit agency who will use any means of bully tactics to gain the debt. But this is really starting to worry me and fear a knock at the door from bailiffs or court action.
Any guidance will be gratefully received.

Sounds like the debt is likely to be "statute barred" and therefore legally unenforceable against you.
