Help needed for debts over 10 years old

Between 1997 and 99 i got myself into debt with loans, overdrafts and credit cards. Originally i hid away ignoring all letters, i assume the debts got bigger and i think i got ccjs. By 2003 i was under so much stress and realised i had to face them so i set up small standing orders with each collection agency. (i was paying about 5) in 2008 i changed my bank accounts and decided to contact the collection agencies. I had paid a couple off but there were two debts left for £1400 and £1500 so i gave both collection agencies (cabot financial and rockwell) my new address and asked them for copies of my original credit agreements as well as details of all monies i had paid and still owed and said that i would suspend my payments until i recieved them. I never recieved the information and i am now starting to recieve letters and telephone calls asking for money and 1 debt has been sold onto yet another colection agency. How am i supposed to really know who i am paying? And how am i supposed to know what i really owe when i get offers to knock £300 off if i pay now? And how do i know if any of my payments i made over the 5 years actually went to the debts. I am totally confused and really need some advice please x x x

    Hi

Difficult to separate out what affected your situation here.

Can you concentrate on the two debts still outstanding. If you asked for the CCA and it was not produced, then it works if no CCJ had been issued. If a debt that had no CCJ and has no CCA is sold on you can write to the creditor telling them off and they have to return the debt to the person you sent the CCA request to but you need work out exactly what happened to each of these debts.

  • I really cant remember which debts the ccjs were for and unfortunatley i have moved house 4 times since this started and along the way i have lost all records and correspondence so all i know is what the collection agencies are telling me now.

Your starting points are the Registry Trust, which records CCJs and your credit record - look for martin's article on here on getting these free.

If you also get a copy of your credit report that may tell you who you still owe money and how much.
