Ideas for former teacher

  • Get her to approach schools and special units direct, too, not just through agencies. I once phoned up a PRU for EBD kids, and they said "come and visit" and I ended up there for 2 years full time. My current job is teaching in a prison - I was moving area, so I phoned the local prisons, did the online application forms for the College, and here I am a year later. I am employed by a very large college that does a lot of Offender Learning but don't just rely on their website. It is very good to phone the Education Managers direct - they know their needs for staff far more than the centralised offices. I started on supply and now have more work than I need. Teaching maths. :-) Some of our staff are over 60, even over 65, we don't have any worries about age.

Get your mum to put all her lessons together, especially her Powerpoints. Then put them on DVD and start marketing them, either herself or through a publisher. If for each lesson she has teaching notes, pupil worksheets and marking scheme, she should sell them easily.

There is especially a huge demand for such materials in the middle east and private schools in Africa. Texbooks are easy and expensive to get hold of, but as your mum will know, complete lesson plans and marking schemes are in demand.

No real work is required, apart from tarting them up for a nice presentation, as she has already got all the materials.

I train Teaching Assistants to Higher Level status - wouldn't mind them covering my grandaughters class - better than SOME supply teachers! NOTE THE WORD SOME - dont tar everyone with the same brush
  • there is a primary school in surrey that needs a teacher who has very holistic views. My daughter attends part-time and a vacancy has become available- the last teacher left after 20 years to do something different.

The school is very small and non-profit making independent.

I thought I'd post this as I obviously want my daughter to be taught by someone who is superb!

pm me and I can give you the school website for you to read up...
