Mattress advice - decent budget

Have just bought a new bed (kingsize) and we weren't sure about any of the mattresses in the shop so are casting our net widely...

I've read lots of comments (mainly from Tim Deegan) about seeking independent retailers. That I would love to do, for so many reasons, but it's difficult.

We've so far managed to visit only Warren Evans (where we bought the bed, so slatted base) and JLP.

We're interested in some kind of Pocket sprung mattress. We're not keen on memory foam, Tempur etc. feels like we'll get too hot.

We're prepared to spend some money on this as, quite frankly, it will be around for a good five or more years so we figure it's worth it.

At warren evans our winner was:
Organic Serene (erm ... £1400)
http://www.warrenevans.com/mattresses/?mgid=1

At JLP, we weren't sure. While you could tell the difference between their Luxury and Premium ranges, there was not enough difference at the top and bottom of the premium ranges to be clear about what one was paying for. Plus I was put off by spring count stats as I realise these are largely irrelevant.

While I don't relish dropping this kind of money on a mattress, it may well be done if it's an appreciable difference from what we have (which I guess anything will be as it's 10 years old!)

In terms of requirements, we're both late thirties and want a reasonably firm mattress (not bothered about different sides being different things and all that).

I realise Tim has said both the above supplies are overpriced for what they are. However, I'm struggling to sort the wheat from chaff on an internet search.

Any thoughts? Tips?

Thanks all.

  • I bought a double rest assured 1000 pocket sprung mattress a couple of months a go from argos was on special offer at the time and cost me about £170 i think. Brilliant but not too soft or hard just right pure luxury.

Just put all the search terms you are looking for into google. Then narrow them down again with things like return policy.

Sorry to pour water on moneytotighttomention's fire, but Argos don't sell good quality mattresses. And Rest Assured are part of the Silentnight group, so I'd stay clear.
  • I just got a great new mattress.

I think its from Silent Night and its called a maricol 3 it is incredibly comfy and padded on top.

I got mine from my local bed shop but you can buy them anywhere try searching Google for online suppliers and discounts
  • i got mine from dreams can't find it on the web now

make sure you haggle if the price is £1500 you say you want to buy this one INCLUDING delivery charge and you not leaving until the deal is done

for a really low price i would say £900 1st BE BRAVE

Oh dear, oh dear. You really should have done a search on silentnight in the forums before you bought it Whatitdo. They do feel very comfortable when new, but unfortunately this doesn't last.

As for Dreams It's all Dinx, they are very very expensive, they have fake sales, and fake price promises.

For anyone else I'd recommend staying well away from big brand names, and big chain stores, if you want good quality for a low price. Shop on line instead from a seller with a good returns policy.
