default on my name for the sake of £250

Hi, Im only 22 years old and a gym management company have registered a debt default on my name.

I joined a gym a year ago. after 1 month they moved the gym 5 miles away from where it was originally. I cancelled my direct debit after 6 months. Now they have registered a default with experion.

I have no idea what to do. I absolutely cannot afford to have this registered againt me. I will try and pay the amount off as soon as possible but the biggest concern is the default.

Can some one please give me some advice. Thank you

Check also Equifax and Call Credit.

Did you check your Experian report through the Credit Expert site and not some dodgy creditratings4u type site? these will have old and out of date info.

    Hope this helps.

yes i spoke with experian. they said a hym cant put a default notice.

i spoke with citizens advice baerau and they said that because i cancelled my direct debit they can put a default notice against me.

Do you think i can get experian to hold off on adding the notice to my account if it comes through?

this will give me time to pay off the £255

Have you just received the default notice? Can take a few weeks to show up on the credit reference agencies. Have you been in contact with the gym? Seems strange they would do a default out of the blue, have they been chasing you for the money previously?
I would start by checking the terms and conditions on the gym membership to see what it says about cancelling and how much notice you need to give. Is also worth putting an official complaint in to the company that due to them moving this made it more difficult for you to attend and therefore there should be some flexibility in allowing you to cancel the membership.

Gyms can be a nightmare, Fitness First were a right bunch of to**ers even though I followed the procedure to the letter.

If you signed an agreement for 12 months they probably are within their rights to default your account.

yes they have sent a default note.

I cancelled by direct debit mid contract so i think this is why they are able to default my account.

I want to pay the whole amount but i also want to avoid the default note.

If they have already issued it, it will be an equal nightmare to remove it.

I'm not really an expert but from reading these forums, unless there was an actual mistake on the account, getting a default notice removed is equal to the tasks of Hercules.

I hope it works out for you though :-)

A default notice usually gives you a period of time to rectify the situation, so I suggest you take advantage of that and then keep an eye on your credit report. If you settle the debt before the deadline you shouldn't end up with a default on your credit report.
