Laptop won't start up after loading windows updates

I was using my daughters laptop tonight and loaded some windows updates. It was windows vista service packs and took ages. Now every time switch it on I get an error message and it starts a scan to find problems. Then it says it cannot repair the computer automatically and ask if o want to send an error message or not. I tried both options and switched on again and it goes through the error scan again ans again. Any ideas?

    Use Vista System Restore

If you can't get to that point, you will need to enter System Restore from the Vista Windows Recovery Environment. You 'll need a disc in that instance.

Follow these instructions in order to create one:
Download and save this Vista Recovery Disc Image to a working computer.
Next, download and install ImgBurn(No need to install the Yahoo Toolbar. Remove the relevant tick). Burn the Image to Disc. Use this guide(skip step 2b)

Follow the instructions exactly and you won't go wrong.

Got into vista system restore and it only offered one restore point which was when I did the wibdows service pack update last night so I clicked next. Then it said confirm disks to recover and they were
C system that said ready to restore
D hp recovery disk.ready to restore
X boot this disk is not in the selected restore point

Items c and d had a tick in the box but not item x. I proceeded with the confm abs the next screen said some disks were not included in the restore point. Any system files and settings on those disks could not berestored. To select a different restore point go back. The only restore point shown when I go back is that one. It runs the restore thing and says it is restoring files but at the end this message comes up.
System restore did not complete successful. Your computersystem files and settings were not changed.
    Details
System restore failed die to an unspecifiederror. The file cannot be opened transactionally, because it's identity depends on the outcome on an unresolved transaction. ( 0x80071Aa7)
You might want try system restore ahain and choose a different restore point"
    What do I do now?

    Number of repair attempts 11
    Session details
    System disk - /device/hatddisk0
    Windows directory-c:/wibdows
    Autochkrun- 0
    Number of root causes- 1

    S
The slashes are supposed to be back slashes but can't fund that on my iPhone that I am using to send this

  • It's an HP and has Vista on - you could find all is wiped I have seen a few people this has happened to and HP just says every time someone complains that this is the first time they have heard of this issue...
I've always rated HP products until recently, same issue occurred for the people I know with Vista update and no data was recoverable. If you can get pc working, turn off Vista updates or switch to windows 7 is my best advice,

It is a hp g6000. Unfortunately the cd drive does not work which would make it difficult to load CDS. I have just switched it on again and it is trying the start up repair thing. I bought a large external hard drive recently and back up all the families documents weekly. Just spoke to my daughter and she is ok with starting again. my last back up to the external drivewas last Sunday so we should not lose much. scan has now stopped so do I go into recovery manager to reload windows Vista or is it the Windows Complet Restore option?

Remove the ticks from all but the C drive and try again. If that fails, you can run the Recovery Manager

I tried that and it did not work either, So i re-installed it from the partition drive. It wiped the hard drive but nearly all her data is on the external drive I mentioned earlier. Made me so glad I bought that. Now I just need to get the bits of data she needs and her photos and music and transfer them back. I am going to take LocalWeb's advice and turn off the Windows Updates. Many thanks Donny, Browntoa and Localweb.

Don't turn off Windows Updates. Install them all now, at least to SP2.
