Contraceptive Implant

Hey all,
Yesterday I got the contraceptive implant inserted. It was done by a trainee doctor who was being "signed off today", the trained doctor was supervising.
I wasn't exactly put at ease with the loud noises and the doctor telling the trainee what she was doing wrong but figured it'd be okay. It took about 25 minutes (I thought it was a 5 minute job) and away I went.
It has been sore ever since but this morning when I took the bandage off I've never felt anything so painful! I was actually crying and had to get the bandage straight back on, I couldn't even turn my arm at all to have a look at it.
I might be being dramatic so just wondering if anyone else has had it done and if what I'm experiencing is normal?
Thanks

Not got any personal experience but know some people who have got it done and were in pain for several days. You have had a minor operation and it will have to heal up. Should be worth it in the long term.0

Mine hurt for a week after. The problems I had were with the side affects, I got really bad sickness [almost like all day morning sickness] so I begged them to take it out. The nurse fumbled around in my arm for a hour and announced I needed an appointment for a scan on my arm to try and locate it. When I had the scan it couldn't be located so I was basically told tough luck we can't find it. Thankfully the symptoms went, but it is a bit worrying having a lost implant floating about somewhere.0

hi there. i had it done a couple of months back and it did only take 5 mins. I had a big bruise for a couple of days after but thats only because the bandage was put on in the wrong place lol. I still have the mark where it was put in and can feel it thru the skin when i touch it but other than that no problems. Your arm will be sore for a little bit so just take it abit easy. Just keep an eye on it. If you dont think it feels right go straight back and explain, im sure they wont mind having a look. Hope everything goes ok hun x0

I had it put in about a month ago. I'm in Cardiff and had mine in the Sexual Health clinic in the Royal Infirmary. It was done by a qualified doctor who was specialising in sexual health and so was supervised by another Doctor. I'm thinking maybe it was the same person.
Mine hurt a little bit when I took the bandage off but was fine after a day or two. When you say it took 25 minutes do you mine the insertion itself or the whole thing took 25 minutes (local anaesthetic, finding the right place in your arm etc)? For me the actual insertion of the implant took about 2 minutes.0 -
Thanks guys

baroness - sounds like the same person! The whole thing took 25 minutes, that sound about right? It's just when I took the bandage off I've never felt pain like it, going to try again tomorrow and hope it's calmed down a bit, it's quite sore as I type though

Yeah, with mine there was a lot of stuff she had to do before hand so I would say the whole process took 15-20 minutes.
I remember thinking when i took the bandage off that i should have left it on longer as it felt really tender but that only lasted about a day, thankfully. I hope yours starts to feel better.0 -
Thanks, definitely putting my mind at ease, going to try to take the bandage off again a bit later, don't really want a huge bandage on my arm for work :rotfl:Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0
