Credit History?

Hello, my husband and I are trying to get a mortgage as we are buying a new home. We currently have a motgae with Natwest, but have seen better deals elsewhere. We have a broker who has done a few checks for us, but one enquiry has been refused and it has identified me as the issue. We regustered for Experian and checked the credit report and both report back as "excellent".
However 2006 I had a dispute with one of the telephone companies in regards an unpaid bill, which had been paid and was then identified as their error. The problem is that it is registering as being a 3 month unpaid bill, which was then settled. I also have one late credit card payment within the same six month period. Can this effect the history so much even though the rest of it is excellent? I can't speak to the company involved until Monday about the possibility of removing this as their initial records don't go back that far!
My other issue is if I now try to apply fully for a mortgage, will I be able to get one?
Can anyone help?
