Cancelling Gym Membership

I've just resigned from my gym membership and am about to cancel the direct debit- as they have taken a DD today, they'll have one month's money from me as notice.

However, the notice period is apparently 90 days. I've seen an earlier thread where someone suggested saying that is a prohibitive cancellation period according to the OFT but has anyone successfully got away with this? The gym is Bannatynes.

I tried to be reasonable with Fitness First when I cancelled my subscription. I wrote & advised I was giving a months notice but they were insistant that the notice period would not start until I had attended a "leaving interview".

As I had taken my membersip out when I was working down south & they wouldn't let me go to my nearest Fitness First at home I eventually just cancelled the direct debit & phoned the manager of the gym & told him I couldnt afford to pay & had given reasonable notice & he could accept it or take me to court.

Never heard anything back from them.

Are all these Gyms run by the MAFIA?
So many people seem to have problems in cancelling their membership. Surely, if the Gym knows that you are having financial problems, they should accept it with good grace and look forward to welcoming you back when your circumstances improve.
Sometimes I'm glad that I am not fit.

If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

  • Cancelling my £50/month gym was the first thing I did after the lbm. I now get equally good work out at home, running or using free weights that I already had.
  • Perhaps someone should look into how Gym's are run..espsecially the financial side of it, their contracts etc.

I had huge problems cancelling my LA Fitness memberships. I was moving house so had to cancel. In the midst of all this i forgot to give 1 months notice period and gave them 3 days instead. I said i would restart at LA Fitness in the area i moved to but they insisted of me paying an extra 2 months! (it was too late in the "billing cycle") to cancel etc etc....

I had enough to do with moving house and after a several letters back and forth i gave in, too stressful.

I now have a membership in a council gym where they're not just after your money!!

And a LOT of people have these problems so i think we should get watchdog or similar to do some undercover work....(ala what they did with the estate agents)
