Help with hair gel for teenage son.

Hello, just wondered if any kind person can recommend a good hair gel for my DS (aged 13)?
He's got very thick 'strong' hair which I've always kept short, however, now that he's hit 13 he's decided he wants a longer more fashionable style (boo hoo!) and we're now in the horrible growing it out stage.
I bought him Shockwaves extra mega strong stuff which held his hair really well but which leaves him with big flakes in his hair as the day wears on (which is obviously not a good look!). This resulted in me going to Boots and buying their own brand professional range shampoo that removes residue from hair products. This is useful to clear out the stuff completely but I think it will be better if we can find a hair gel that doesn't flake in the first place.
Any recommendations will be gratefully received x

Does he need gel? could it be tamed with straighteners and a little wax?If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

OMG pleeeeeese don't say that! In all honesty, it probably would be better to use straighteners and wax but his hair is not that long yet and I want to get away with something very quick. I'll bear that in mind though for when it's grown longer.
Thanks x0 -

Thanks, I'll look out for that one x0 -
my hubby spikes his hair and uses either Schwarzkopf Got2b Glued (in a yellow tube) or Garnier Fructis Extreme Hold Hair Glue.
You could always go old style and suggest Brylcreem

My husband has very dark hair and the only thing that doesn't give him flakes is toni and guy funky gum which you can get in boots. It's often on offer but you could buy a small trial size first.0

Try VO5 Fibre Putty. The stuff is brilliant and washes out easily. I used to use it all the time before i started shaving my hair off! lol0

I sympathise with you OP
. Last year my 14 year old son grew his hair out into the 'disney' style as I call it - ie Justin Bieber, Cody Linley etc. He also has very thick hair which refused to go in the style that he wants. He would drive me mad in the morning wanting me to straighten his hair for him, in fact we usually had to battle for who got to the straighteners and mirror first, and as for my hair spray!!! He was worse than a girl trying to get the style perfect but thank god I managed to talk him into cutting it all off again for the summer. Unfortunately now the winter is approaching again, so is the longer hair
. Sorry I don't have any tips re gel but just wanted to let you know what you might be in for! 0 -
Thanks 'Notsayingaword' I think that Disney type is what my boy is dreaming of too but dont think he realises how much work goes into those styles. I'm hoping he asks for a short cut very soon!0

Thanks for advice, my boy has dark hair too which is why he's so worried about it. I'll look out for T & G x0
