Hello
My boyfriend only has a few basic tools (screwdiver, spanner etc) and no powertools so for Christmas I plan to buy a toolbox and fill it with tools. Plan is to get him started and then he can build up his collection. However i haven`t a clue which brands are good quality and value for money and what to go for. Can anyone help? My budget for the tools is £80, thanks!

Nice idea. First , not a tool box , go for a tool bag . Bigger problem , you wont get much for £80
Shopping list Bag £10
Cheap electric drill £25 ( not cordless)
Extension lead £12
Drill bits ( case ) £10
Then add Stanley Knife , good steel tape
Screw drivers and some screws
( cost based on Screwfix cat.)
Now waiting for the alternative xmas lists
To get back to the original question , Bosch
/Stanley are good0 -
What does he want to work at using the tools? This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

Thanks for the replies so far. He works on his car quite a bit- replacing brake pads etc, and i know he is going to service his car himself in the next few months. He has a full spanner set, extension leads and a screwdriver set with additional attachments that just clip on (not sure what the correct name is lol). I guess just to get the everydays tools?0

If he is going to be working on his car then a socket set would be worth getting.0

Since your looking at tools for the car,you can't go wrong with Halfords Professional range.Look at there sets of sockets, spanners as they come with lifetime warranty.
They do have good promotions and reduce these to 1/2 half, make sure you don't buy at full price.0 -
What a fantastic girlfriend! Tools are the best gift!
If its for working on cars then along with decent ring combanation spanners a good socket set is essential, +1 that halfords pro/advance is fine and they are doing this one cheap at the moment (take out the spaces) tiny url . com / halfordssocketset. 8mm - 32 will cover just about anything you might encounter on a car and plug sockets are useful for doing your own servicing. The imperial gear is sometimes usefull for rusty fasteners.
If he doesn't already have them, a trolley jack and axle stands essential for safe working, the nasty jack that comes with your car is a recipe for a proper disaster.
Other than that the most used tools for me on my cars are my 24" breaker bar and my bondhus gorrilagrip hex and torx keys (indestructably tough!). Brands I personaly would trust are teng tools, clarke pro and halfords pro.
You can always get him a tin of wd-40 , smells great and fixes everything!0 -
black & decker (the black ones- pro range?) or dewelt seem to be fave, among local builders i have seen around town.
why not ask family what they have, and get something else, to setup a swap / share club!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
