Changing job so soon?

Hi!

Looking for a little advice, three months ago I changed job. Had gone very stale and when I evaluated my career options it was very limited within the company itself so I took the plunge and got a new job. However I am not entirely happy with the change, I feel like I have went backwards career wise and not forward... I went from a busy environment to an extremely quiet environment with no guidance or direction from management...

I have been sending out my CV to see whats out there and if there is any interest and there is, I have two telephone interviews and looking for some advice on what to do when they ask the "why are you moving job" question... I don't want to sound negative... any ideas???

Thanks!
Sarah

Provided that this isn't a "habit" on your CV, I would tell the truth. Nearly. Leave out the stuff about the management! But the rest of it sounds fine - people are allowed to make misjudgements, provided they don't flit like a butterfly!
  • Thanks for your input. This is my third job since college, stayed 2 years and 9months in my first job then moved to my second job for 3 years so I do have "staying power" when it's right...

I have managed to secure a job interview for Thursday this week but I am now worried about the "why are you leaving your job so soon" question... :-/
  • 'because I was unable to settle in the current position and felt that I had made a backward step in my career which is why I am looking at jobs such as this one'

That way its a subtle flattering of the job you have applied for as they think you think its a step up and a more important job.

"Because I was unable to settle in the current position"
Do NOT say this, this suggests that you do not cope well with change.

"I am looking for a role that is challenging which will enable me to utilise all my skills. At my present position with _____, there is lack of opportunity to develop my skills and to progress in terms of my career. After researching your company, I believe I'd make an excellent (add Job Title) where I can contribute and put to use all my knowledge and experience.

    - Do NOT go into anymore detail, remember, they have called you for an interview because they like your experience.

    - As long as you have convinced them in their head there was no issue with your 'reason for leaving' i.e you hated your boss, you couldn't cope with the pressure, they will not dig and swiftly move on.

    - See you've turned a negative into a positive, so... there was lack of opportunity HOWEVER mr interviewer your company is bloody fantastic, the role is perfect and I would be the best candidate. (not in those words of course :p)

Also remember, hand shake at the beginning and end. Never slouch, always sit up. Smile, and when you're closing the interview, repeat how interested you are in the role and really show that you've a keen interest on the job. *RESEARCH COMPANY* don't ask what the company can offer YOU, don't mention salary unless asked. All these types of things should be addressed when you've been made an offer. You need to be selling yourself, and not showing them all you're concerned about is what they can give you.

Ofc you can ask, are there opportunities to progress within the company?

    Good luck!

I personally would not say what you just said because its basically a bulls**t answer that is obviously crafted and if someone else said that to me I would see it as a plastic answer and not one of truth.

There is nothing wrong in admitting you made a mistake with your current job as long as your CV is not full of 3 month jobs which the OP's is not.

A little update, I had my interview and it went well. I explained to them it was the commute that was the reason for my job seeking.

I now have a second interview later this week. However I am now unemployed, at my probationary review yesterday I explained I was unhappy and with mutual consent I left yesterday. A little risky at this time of year and economical climate but I trust my CV will get me a job soon enough.

How do I brooch this now?? Avoid the fact or tell them I am unemployed?
