Can I get a mortgage?

    It is not impossible to get a mortgage with a default but it does tend to mean that you would not get as good a rate and would not be eligible for many of the 'special offers'. You would also tend to need a higher deposit as many of the low deposit offers now are dependent on a good credit rating. Obviously the longer ago a default was the better it looks so in a few years you would probably be able to get a mortgage, albeit on a bit of a sucky rate, and then could look at remortgaging to a better rate when the default dropped off at the end of the 6 years.
