I'm new to this so I hope you are all a friendly bunch on here
currently sitting on the Nationwide svr of 2.5%. Aim to start making some overpayments.
I used to have lodgers in the last house, I don't fancy them here 24/7 this time. However a Mon-Fri spare room let would be ok. I have had someone come to look at the room tonight who seems interested.
that would be a relatively easy £80 a week to chuck in the overpayment pot.
Any other ideas gratefully received :A:A

Hi, welcome!
Am sure those £80 a week OP would make a big difference to your mortgage. Have you used one of the calculators to see?

Morning all,
Update to my diary.
I had someone look round the room to let last week but don't think he's suitable. Young lad more like my son really. He'd probably also think it would be like living with his parents again
However, there is a local school advertising for host families so may give them a call later. I've also got the room listed on easyroommate and on the work intranet (which is where youngladlodger came from)
My daughter has been staying in the room Mon-Fri but gets her own place nearer work at the weekend. I will miss her, but it will make my food bills cheaper :money:
I wouldn't dream of charging her rent since she has only just started this new job and needs every penny herself for the deposit for her rent - and the petrol. She will be saving lots on petrol by being much nearer to work too.
Ok, so it's payday today. My new month's resolution is to NOT go anywhere near IKEA (although I do need a Billy bookcase). Trouble is i would end up buying more than that .
Nor am i going to B&Q, Homebase etc etc. for anyone who's read any of my other threads, I have recently moved house to a [STRIKE]wreck[STRIKE][/STRIKE][/STRIKE] almost new house now. I've renewed pretty much everything from the windows, doors, fascias & soffits, kitchen, bathroom, rads, electrics, lighting, carpets and decorated EVERY room.
this has been since May when I moved in. Trouble is it's very tempting to get stuff for the house when I've been used for the last 5 or 6 months to spend on the house.
But it is all done now, the money i'd budgeted for the renovation has all gone, so it's time to settle down and start paying it back.
So, onwards and upwards, October is going to be No Spend Month for me (apart from the absolute essentials of course)
wish me luck!Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -

Hi Spirit, re host families; no done this myself but my sister did and my mum did years ago when we were growing up. To be honest am not sure its the best way to make money as I think my sis ended up spending more that she earned from it! I guess not all schemes are the same but she arranged lots of extra trips and outings for the 'guest' and of course had to take her two along and that cost loads. Also the guest she had staying would only eat certain food so she had to buy it in separately and cook it just for her. I think it was a lot of work for not very much financial reward - the reward comes from welcoming someone into your family and giving them a taste of family life and the culture, history etc in a different country. Years later when she was grown up and married the French girl who stayed at my mums brought her family to visit as she wanted them to see where she had stayed and had such a great time. I guess other people may have different experiences with being a host family though?
Good luck on your MF quest0 -
I've not done anything about letting the room yet (other than leaving the ad on my work intranet)
However, work asked for people to do overtime last Sunday at double time so worked 8am to 2pm. Really boring admin stuff but at least will get some extra in next month's pay.
Then tonight just before the office closed they again asked for more help, double time again £££££, so I worked 6pm til just now.
Should help a bit. Hoping to get more of this overtime since the rate of pay is better than room letting if you divide it on an hourly basis.
Planning a no spend month - except for essentials. will have to put a tenner towards the Christmas party this week, so that didn't last long!Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
Instead of OPing your 2.5% mortgage, consider using a cash ISA paying a higher rate.In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0
