Cattie....I'm glad you understood that...and thanks by the way...as I kept losing my thread just trying to write it down.

I let my claim run out last September as I was in a bit of a mess anyway (emotionally etc) and just didn't bother sorting a new claim. TC peeps wrote and said that if I didn't claim, I would have to pay back what I'd had previously etc etc. So that's why I claimed. The woman was soooo nice and helpful, telling me that I must claim, I'm entitled etc etc, and I'd be daft not to. Look where it got me?!!

it's worth writing to them-give them a sob story, explain how emotional you were after break-up or any other reasons and especially if you were depressed or had gone to the docs for depression as one of the syptoms is not wanting to do ANYTHING or talk to anyone e.t.c and say this is why you hadn't rang, and tell them that you weren't given very good information e.t.c,just tell them everything you have just said and then your emotional state etc and see what happens?

ok i turn 25 this week and have my forms filed out ready to send off to claim working tax credits, but now you guys have scared me. i wonder if it'd be better not to claim and therefore not risk any hassle of overpayments etc. technically i can live off the money i make, though the extra towards my debts would be nice, but if i'm risking getting a letter through the door asking me for thousands back i'm not so sure anymore. what would you guys suggest?
  • it's absolutely outrageous - the point being, they've paid it to you at relatively small sums over a period of time and yet they expect you to pay them back within a month!

If they allowed you to pay it back over the same amount of time you'd received it it would help (although doesn't stop my anger at their total incompetence)

Have a look at https://www.taxaid.org.uk - it is a charity and they have lots of good, free information on these issues.
