Make a train cake

My nephew wants a train cake for his fifth birthday next month and, as designated cake maker for the family, I get to make it. If anyone has any ideas or recipes, I would love to hear them. I'm pretty good at baking and modelling (food, not topless lol!), so should be able to manage slightly tricky recipes.
Please help me, MSE's, you are my only hope!

Hi Frogling.
My wife made a similar cake for one of our son's 3rd birthday.
Didn't follow a recipe, just used some chocolate swiss roll, covered in metkled chocolate, with varios artistic flourishes of different sweets to make the wheels, funnel etc.
He LOVED it
But if it is a recipe you want - how about this one I just found online:

Have fun

YEP! Swiss roll all the way!
Take a large swiss roll and a smaller one (you can make them yourself or buy them..) and a few mini ones..
Take a cake board.. and lay down either some icing or liqourish (sic) tracks.. then lay down the mini swiss rolls across the tracks to be wheels.. you then put the largest swiss roll across them long ways to create the body of the engine.. then the smaller one you put end on (sticking up) at the end to be the cabin.. cover in chocolate or icing and decorate0 -
.....and you could make tracks from chocolate fingers or licqourice laces.0

Also go to the library and see if you can get out a book with ideas for decorating cakes: I used to have a Jane Asher book and an Australian Woman's Weekly one which inspired most of my ideas.
Anything which lends itself to a flat design with big blocks of plain colour can be done with sheets of icing. Outline the blocks with black liquorice laces, it covers the gaps. And you can even paint food colouring on. Looks splendid! Winnie the Pooh is one I did that way.
My childminder's daughter did us a FANTASTIC TB4, but it's a very long time ago ...
What a lovely aunt / uncle you are.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
:-* Thanks everyone - I've got some great ideas from all of your suggestions. Here's hoping I can put them into practice and make a great cake. Choo-choo!0

This was one I made some time ago for my son's christening. It's excellent if you have a lot of children as you just keep adding carriages!! It was a huge success and the adults loved it too!Named after my cat, picture coming shortly0 -
We put this train cake together in a couple of hours. It was a huge amount of fun for me! It's also a bonus I like cleaning the bowl of icing.:money: with-kids.com/easy-recipes/train-birthday-cake.htm0
