DLA and Debt Managment Plan

  • as a DWP employee who works at the DLA office (have left myself open now!!), we get lots of parents thinking that the childs DLA is their money and we have to stress to the parent that the benefit is for the childs need. I would therefore think that it should not be accounted for in a DMP. I would also assume that the law would back that up.

Just also like to reiterate that our helpline staff would not be able to give any advice as to whether to include DLA in a DMP as they are trained benefit advisors not Debt Practitioners.
  • The DLA is NOT YOUR MONEY to count as personal income towards anything never mind your debts.. It is paid to your daughter, I'm sure a judge would look harshly on any parents spending DLA intended for the care of a child.
It could also be construed as financial abuse if it denies your daughter her rightful benefit.
