child tax credit confusing question???

Hy
Ive just been on the phone to the tax office regarding my child tax credits.
I will be changing jobs. They told me to phone back when i new how much ill be earning.
The figure they want of my is how much ive earnt from my old job from 5th april 2010 till i start my new emplyement next week and then the figure of how much ill earn in my new employement untill 4th april 2011. AND they want me to deduct from this £100 per week of my maternity pay,,???
Im totaly confused as to what ive got to work out. How many weeks of £100 have i got to deduct?
Im confused because obviously ive not been at work for nearly nine months and ive only been earning my maternity pay since april 2010?
They said when working out my tax credits they take the figure i earnt the year before, - why? my maternity pay actually started 4 months at the end of last financial year.
The figure they have for my earnings for last year is £15600, but i think now this must be wrong because for the last 4 months i was on maternity pay- jan-april 2010. will this effect the amount ive been recieving of them? £21.50 a week.
any advice on what ive got to work out would be appreciated because i just could not understand what the tax lady was saying..
thanks

You need to work out how much you have and will earn up until you change jobs first, from 5th April 2010. Estimate the amount of any future payments as accurately as you can.
If any of those payments have been SMP, then you can deduct £100 from each week you received it.
Then you will have to estimate how much you think you may earn between the start of your new job until 4th April next year.
I always over estimate by a bit to try and avoid receiving an overpayment.August GC 10th - 10th : £200 / £70.61

I think it is ridiculous to expect a member of the public to do their arithmetic for them, we should be able to give them the figures and let them work it out, the whole tax credits system is ridiculous, especially for people of limited capacity (not you original poster) but imagine, if it's complex for us how do people who are a bit 'slow' figure it all outBlackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

thanks for both replies.
you to clarify ONE thing,
Ive NOT been at work since april 4th 2010 (ive been on maternity leave) so as maternity pay since this date of £123 per week would mean my total to date would be only £23 per week up till now?
is this correct,?0 -
