claiming a tax refund

in Cutting tax
Hi I was sent a tax refund letter from my union. I completed the form. I have now recieved a letter form the tax refund company saying they think I will have a strong possibility of a tax refund. Further on in the letter it states no refund= no fee and if they are successful in helping recover a tax refund I will recieve 60p from each pound they recover.
I take it that they keep the 40p in the pound they have recovered! Is this the only way of claiming tax back without been charged!
Many thanks for reading this post :j

I doubt it. But we need more details - what has given rise to your overpayment of tax in the past?Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0

My guess is that this is another example of fixed rate expense deductions claims which have been going on for at least 20 years. Its shameful that unions are supporting this type of activity.
All this 'tax agent' is going to do is write to your tax office claiming the fixed rate expense allowance for your trade for the past 4 years or whatever. This is something you can do yourself and keep all the money. There are several threads on here about it.0 -

Those three course dinners and fancy hotels for union meetings don't pay for themselves, you know.0 -
RIng HMRC 0845 3000627 and they'll tell you if you're due a refund. (for free)0

Re: Tax Refund Notification
Our record indicates that you have overpaid tax. Therefore, eligible to
receive a tax refund of GBP580.
To reclaim overpaid tax you must submit a tax refund request and allow us
2-3 weeks in order to process it.
In order to process your refund you will need to complete the attached
application form. Download the attached form with this email and complete
the form.
When might you have overpaid tax through your job?
You may have paid too much tax if:
* you started a new job and had an emergency tax code for a while
* your employer was using the wrong tax code
* you were only employed for part of the year
* you're a student who only worked at holiday times and didn't complete
form P38S Student Employees
* you had more than one job at the same time
* other income you have which we tax through your tax code eg
savings/investment income has reduced since you last told HM Revenue &
Customs (HMRC) about it - which means the amount of income included in
your tax code is too high
* you stopped working and didn't get any taxable earnings or benefits for
the rest of the year
* your circumstances changed - for example you changed from full to
part-time working or became self-employed
Note : A refund can be delayed a variety of reasons, for example
submitting invalid records or applying after deadline.
Yours Sincerely,
HM Revenue & Customs
It looks real but the attachment that came with it
wanted all my bank details including passwords and answers to security questions
If in doubt throw it out (or at least check with the inland revenue)

Thanks for your replys. I have looked into this and have rung the tax office. I have also ripped up the tax company refund letters. It is shameful that my union is supporting this. Thanks for your replys :rotfl:0

If only more people did this, would hopefully put these "tax agents" out of business...don't forget to spread the word to your colleagues to claim themselves too. HMRC will always check for free and let you know.0
